I was going to have Karen write an editor’s letter about the reception of the Max Builds books, so I would not have to. I have plenty of excuses being too busy and traveling, but the honest truth was I didn’t feel I had anything to say that I had not said before. That changed.
I am on the road this week checking on venues for our 2027 shows. When I drive I listen to podcasts; one hit the mark and tied a bunch of things together for me. Then I received an email praising the Max Builds books and it wrapped everything up and put a bow on top.
The email stated the reception Max Builds is getting is wonderful and maybe that is a signal people are coming back into the trades.
The podcast was about fathers and sons and how important it is for good men to model behavior for their sons, boys and young men. Talking doesn’t work, it needs to be imitation.
Part of the podcast was about why de Tocqueville thought the American Republic survived when previous attempts at self rule seemed to universally fail after roughly 20 years. His assertion was it was in the unique way that American men passed on their self-reliance and willingness to intelligently accept risk to their sons.
Strong “good” men are a requirement for our civilization to survive. And every industry depends on passing along what we’ve learned through experience. Skills, values, and work ethic don’t simply appear on their own—they’re taught, demonstrated and reinforced over time.
There is a quote that says, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade, they know, they will never sit in.” It’s a reminder that the work we do today often benefits people we may never meet. Builders understand this idea better than most. The structures you put up today may still be standing long after you’re gone.
I do not believe there is a resurgence in the construction trades, yet. Plant seeds. Build things for your great grandchildren. Everything that truly matters is long term. Max Builds is one seed, and yes I am old.
And pray for anyone living in a place without good men.
